Can't play any games on Windows 7 ultimate, help?

I just got this awesome game called Darksiders and I just finished installing it earlier and tried playing but it wouldn't work. the same error messages keeps popping up, same with my other game, NFS carbon and most wanted. it keeps saying "DarksidersPC has stopped working". it's kind of getting on my nerves by now.
the problem might be that my computer came with Windows vista in it and about a month ago a friend of mine installed Windows 7 ultimate on it. everything else seems fine except for this problem and a lack of driver for my speakers, but that has nothing to do with this.
any advice on how to fix it? patches, cracks anything?
